The original Shropshire amulet was found beneath the mantlepiece of a fireplace in a farmhouse built in the early seventeenth century on the Welsh Marshes, on the border of Wales and England, in the rural area of Shropshire. The original amulet was cast from pewter and overlaid with gold leaf, and had markings inscribed on both faces. There was no maker's mark, but given the history of witchcraft in that region, the symbols upon it were suggested to represent celestial bodies, the sun, the moon, the Druidic spirit, and the bee, as well as having atropaic significance.
